Preventing Burst Pipes During a Salem Hard Freeze

When a polar snap pours out of the Gorge, valley pipes pay for it. The cold-night routine that keeps yours intact — and the thaw-day moves if they’re not.

The Gorge turns the valley into a freezer

Most winters, Salem barely freezes. Then the pressure lines up east of the Cascades, the Columbia River Gorge becomes a wind tunnel, and arctic air pours into the valley overnight — twenty degrees by morning, single digits if the snap holds. Pipes in exterior walls, garage ceilings, and crawlspaces freeze first, and they freeze silently. The burst announces itself at thaw, when the ice plug melts and the split the ice made becomes a fountain.

The cruelest part: the damage happens after the worst cold, on the warming day. Everyone relaxes when the temperature climbs — and that’s exactly when the phones light up.

The cold-night routine

When the forecast says snap: let faucets on exterior walls drip overnight — moving water resists freezing and relieves the pressure that splits pipes. Open the cabinet doors under sinks so house heat reaches the wall. Disconnect every hose — a connected hose traps water in the bibb and the wall behind it. Keep the thermostat at sixty minimum, even if you leave town. And know where your main shutoff is tonight: at the meter box or where the line enters the house. Practice closing it once, so the 2 a.m. version isn’t your first attempt.

If a pipe freezes but hasn’t burst — no water at the tap, frost on the line — gentle heat and patience usually save it. If it bursts: shutoff first, then call. We repair the line and dry the damage in the same visit, because the water never waits politely in one room.
